Notes About the Data
|
The data in the RHInterchange comes from organizations that procure contraceptives. Information about each of the Data Providers appears below.
Value: Value for all data providers is harmonized to represent the total landed cost for the commodity provided (i.e., unit price, shipping, insurance, any related testing, etc.). It is calculated differently depending on the data provider. USAID provides the cost charged to the USAID Mission, by purchase order. UNFPA provides the value on an average per item basis (see notes under UNFPA Data).
Quantity: Units of measure for all methods are smallest dispensing units. Please note an exception detailed below under UNFPA Data.
Funding Sources: Of the 16 funding sources displayed, the RHI reflects all of UNFPA and USAID's contraceptive purchases. For IPPF, the RHI displays procurements carried out centrally (i.e. not procurements carried out individually by the Member Associations). For all other Funding Sources (e.g., DFID, MOH, MSI, World Bank), the RHI contains a portion of their contraceptive purchases, representing only those purchases carried out by organizations participating in the RHInterchange.
Errors in the data: The RHInterchange does not manipulate the information provided by the data providers. Therefore, errors in data originate in the data providers' systems. Please alert us to data errors through the Contact Us link above. For further information, contact the data provider.
Data Providers: Detail for each data provider is below.

UNFPA Data
|
UNFPA data reflects purchase orders entered in UNFPA's system between January and September 2003, and 2004 to current day. This information includes purchases made with UNFPA funds as well as purchases where UNFPA was the procurement agent (i.e., where UNFPA purchased items on behalf of a country government or another institution, using a donor, government or institution's funds). Where UNFPA acted as the procurement agent, the RHInterchange displays the information by the Funding Source reported by UNFPA (i.e. MOH, World Bank, etc., and not as "UNFPA").
Notes on 2003 data: All UNFPA shipments for this period have been assigned a shipment date of December 31, 2003, regardless of the actual shipment date. Dollar values for each purchase order are based on the obligated amount, which includes the costs of procurement, shipping, and related insurance. Quality assurance costs (i.e., sampling and testing), which are covered by separate purchase orders in UNFPA's system, are included in the RHI as part of the commodity purchase order's value, wherever possible. Recipient information, while listed as the UNFPA office in country, is most often the Ministry of Health.
Notes on 2004 to current data: Because this data comes from a different (new) procurement system, information differs from 2003 information. Dollar values for this data are based on global prices, by method, which include unit cost, shipping, testing and any other related costs or fees. Thus, they do not reflect the actual cost to country for a specific shipment, but rather, reflect a general price for that method. In addition, due to the original procurement system's ability to assign default codes where information is not entered, a number of purchases are assigned to "United States". To find out the actual country where those shipments were sent, one must inquire with UNFPA.
Orals provided by UNFPA are usually tracked as units of one cycle. However, some orals, including Microgynon, Microlut, and Oralcon, are sometimes tracked in packs of 3 cycles, which means the quantity displayed in RHI may need to be multiplied by 3. The Notes field in the Shipment Detail Report for an individual shipment usually indicates pack size.
UNFPA provides updates to the RHInterchange on a daily basis. For additional information, please contact the UNFPA Procurement Services Branch at procurement@unfpa.org, or visit http://www.unfpa.org/procurement/.

International Planned Parenthood Federation - IPPF
|
|
http://www.ippf.org/
|
IPPF donates contraceptives (along with a variety of medical and clinical equipment, consumables, office and audiovisual equipment, and vehicles) in support of the programme work carried out by FPAs. Through the Commodity Grant (part of the Annual Programme Budget), IPPF's Materials Management department receives requests to purchase a range of items. These items are then shipped to recipient FPAs in the most cost effective manner. Although the supplied list of commodities is extensive, contraceptives account for over 70% of the annual spend. According to global statistics compiled by UNFPA, IPPF has remained fairly consistent in supplying 5% of all donated contraceptives over the last ten years.

|
For more than 30 years, UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, has been procuring contraceptives and related commodities for the developing world. UNFPA is today the largest public sector procurer of these items. In 2007 UNFPA procured more than $63 million of such contraceptives as condoms, injectables, pills, implants and IUDs. Almost half of UNFPA's contraceptive procurement is done on behalf of such third party clients as governments, UN organisations and NGOs.
