About the Data

Notes About the Data
The data in the RHInterchange comes from organizations that procure contraceptives. Information about each of the Data Providers appears below.

Value: Value for all data providers is harmonized to represent the total landed cost for the commodity provided (i.e., unit price, shipping, insurance, any related testing, fees, etc.).

Quantity: Units of measure for all methods are smallest dispensing units.

Funding Sources: Of the funding sources displayed, the RHI reflects all of UNFPA and USAID's contraceptive purchases. For IPPF and MSI, the RHI displays procurements carried out centrally (i.e. not procurements carried out by individual country programs). For all other Funding Sources (e.g., DFID, KfW, MOH, World Bank, etc.), the RHI contains a portion of their contraceptive purchases, representing only those purchases carried out by organizations participating in the RHInterchange.

Destination Country: The few shipments for which the final destination is unknown are assigned to the group "Destination Country Unknown," which appears as a "region" in the Geographic Area menu.

Errors in the data: The RHInterchange does not manipulate the information provided by the data providers. Therefore, errors in data originate in the data providers' systems. Please alert us to data errors through the Contact Us link above. For further information, contact the data provider.

Data Providers: Detail for each data provider is below.
IPPF Data
IPPF data reflects purchase orders from early 2002 to present. IPPF provides updates to the RHInterchange on a daily basis.
UNFPA Data
Purchase orders included
UNFPA data reflects purchase orders entered in its system between January and September 2003, and January, 2004 to present.

Shipment Date, Funding Source and Recipient
Shipment Date: All 2003 UNFPA shipments have been assigned a shipment date of December 31, 2003, regardless of the actual shipment date.

Funding Source: All contraceptives purchased by UNFPA are included in the RHInterchange, regardless of funding source. Purchases fully or partly financed by UNFPA are listed under Funding Source UNFPA. Orders financed with third-party funds (i.e. where UNFPA acted as the procurement agent) are listed under the Funding Source reported by UNFPA (e.g. MOH, World Bank). UN Peacekeeping missions are grouped as one funding source (UN Peacekeeping), as are Ministries of Health (MOH). UNFPA assigns Funding Source “OTHER” to such smaller clients as local NGOs.

Recipient: While listed as the UNFPA country office, the ultimate recipient organization is most often the Ministry of Health.

Update schedule
UNFPA provides updates to the RHInterchange on a daily basis. Purchases for new third-party clients may not appear immediately in the RHInterchange. This delay is no more than one quarter.

For additional information, please contact the UNFPA Procurement Services Branch at procurement@unfpa.org, or visit http://www.unfpa.org/procurement/
USAID Data
The RHInterchange receives daily updates from USAID, and contains shipment data from 2000 to the present.

For additional information about USAID contraceptive donations, please visit the My Commodities section of the USAID | DELIVER PROJECT web site. This is the source of contraceptive and condom shipment details to the RHInterchange.

The USAID | DELIVER PROJECT web site also features information about the commodity security status of USAID-supported countries, reference materials on commodity security and logistics, and links to other sources of information.

Projects include collaborations with local NGOs, hospitals, and ministries as well as with global partners who have presence in multiple countries. Donation recipients work through their respective means to increase women's access to the LNG-IUS as a contraceptive option, and quality family planning services. As of July 2009, the ICA Foundation has donated over 25,600 LNG-IUS.
International Planned Parenthood Federation - IPPF
http://www.ippf.org/
IPPF donates contraceptives (along with a variety of medical and clinical equipment, consumables, office and audiovisual equipment, and vehicles) in support of the programme work carried out by FPAs. Through the Commodity Grant (part of the Annual Programme Budget), IPPF's Materials Management department receives requests to purchase a range of items. These items are then shipped to recipient FPAs in the most cost effective manner. Although the supplied list of commodities is extensive, contraceptives account for over 70% of the annual spend. According to global statistics compiled by UNFPA, IPPF has remained fairly consistent in supplying 5% of all donated contraceptives over the last ten years.

Demographic data in Motion Chart Visualization
The following data is included in the Motion Chart Visualization:

Income
Definition: Gross domestic product (GDP) per capita adjusted for differences in purchasing power (in international dollars1, fixed 2005 prices, purchasing power parity (PPP) based on 2005 International Comparison Program).
Source: Gapminder.org (http://www.gapminder.org/gapminder-world/indicators-in-gapminder-world/) downloaded 19-Apr-09.
Data manipulations: 2008 values were projected using linear regression based on the 2000-2007 data.

Population
Definition: Total population
Source: Gapminder.org (http://www.gapminder.org/gapminder-world/indicators-in-gapminder-world/) downloaded 19-Apr-09.
Data manipulations: None.

Contraceptive Use Among Married Women (CPR)
Definition: Percentage of currently married or "in-union" women of reproductive age (15-49) who are currently using any form of modern contraception. "Modern" methods include clinic-based and supply methods such as the pill, implants, injectables, IUD, condom, and sterilization.
Source: These data are from a wide variety of sources:
Each of these sources, in turn, has compiled their data from a wide variety of surveys. Please refer to each source for a description of its data characteristics. The majority of the data is from the Population Reference Bureau; where gaps existed, other sources were used where possible.
Data manipulations: Where no CPR data was found for a specific year, the most recent previous year’s CPR is used. Where no previous year’s data was found, the CPR is reported as zero. Therefore, a country’s reported CPR for a given year may be derived from a survey performed in a prior year.

Fertility Rate
Definition: Total number of children that would be born to each woman over her lifetime based on prevailing age-specific fertility rates (referred to as total fertility rate or TFR).
Source: Gapminder.org (http://www.gapminder.org/gapminder-world/indicators-in-gapminder-world/) downloaded 19-Apr-09.
Data manipulations: Total fertility data is available in five-year increments. Therefore, we used data from 2000 for the year 2004, and data from 2005 for the years 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008. No extrapolation was performed.

Public Health Expenditure
Definition: Percent of government expenditure on health. Public health expenditure consists of recurrent and capital spending from government (central and local) budgets, external borrowings and grants (including donations from international agencies and nongovernmental organizations), and social (or compulsory) health insurance funds.
Source: Gapminder.org (http://www.gapminder.org/gapminder-world/indicators-in-gapminder-world/) downloaded 19-Apr-09.
Data manipulations: Data was consistently available for 2004 and 2005. For 2006-2008, where data were not available, values were projected using linear regression based on the 2001-2005 data.

Couple Years of Protection (CYP)
Definition: Volume (quantity) of contraceptives provided expressed in CYPs. CYP is an estimate of the number of years (or fractions of a year) of protection provided by each unit of contraception. It can be used to report across different methods of contraception.
